HALE COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – A small town in West Alabama goes from having no health care options to one that is open and available to everyone.
People from Akron in Hale County welcomed a new telehealth station to the community.
It is a large stand where you can walk in and immediately talk to someone about health problems.
This is part of a partnership between Auburn University, the University of West Alabama and several state and local partners.
The telehealth station is located in the Akron City Library.
People who use it can talk to someone privately, in a virtual environment, and use diagnostic tools within the station to share information about their health.
“So they can keep their health care. They can focus more on preventive healthcare. And if there are outcomes at the station, or referrals are needed, the physicians can refer them to other providers outside the area,” said Hollie Cost, the assistant vice president for Outreach and Public Service at Auburn University.
There are no costs associated with using the telehealth station for patients.
Insurance is also not necessary.
This station is one of many placed in small towns of similar size in West Alabama.
